Screen recording has become an essential tool for many professionals and individuals. Whether it’s for creating tutorials, recording gameplay, or documenting software bugs, the ability to capture what’s happening on your screen is invaluable.

If you have a Dell laptop, there are several ways you can record your screen, ranging from built-in Windows utilities to powerful third-party applications like Zight.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the different ways to screen record on a Dell laptop. We recommend using superb software for screen recording, so we’ll also take you through using Zight for comprehensive recording needs.

Let’s jump right in!

Better Than the Native Tools: Screen Record on Dell with Zight

In your workplace today, you want a screen recorder that also lets you annotate and edit your files – these are advanced features you won’t find in many native tools. A good one also lets you collaborate on the file with colleagues!

That’s why we recommend Zight for your Dell laptop. It comes as a Windows application, and you can also get it as a Chrome extension. Here’s how to screen record with both options:

1. How to Record Screen On a Dell Computer With the Zight App

Have you already created a Zight account and downloaded the Windows app to your Dell laptop? Here’s how to start recording:

  1. Open the Zight app from your files. For easier access, we recommend pinning the app to your taskbar.
  2. Click Record, and a panel will appear, allowing you to choose between recording the full screen or a specific area. You will use your mouse to select the region. You’ll also want to choose your recording preferences, such as Screen Only, Screen & Cam, or Cam Only. Depending on your preferences, you can use a mic (toggle it on on the panel) and a camera (if you want to record your webcam).
  3. With Zight, you can even choose between Video and GIF (here’s how to record a GIF). When you’re done with the preferences, click Start recording and wait for the 3-second timer before you start recording.
  4. Want to make the process easier? You can also just press Alt + Shift + 6. When you do, the screen will dim, and you can click your mouse once to select Full Screen or click and drag your mouse to select the region. Then, click Enter or Start (after selecting the region), and Zight will start recording using your previous recording preferences.
  5. Don’t forget to annotate your videos as you record them. When recording, click the edit feature at the bottom panel, and you can add different elements like the arrow, line, highlighter, pen, ellipse, and rectangle. You can even choose their color and duration on the video. When done, resume your recording and hit the Finish button when done.

2. How To Screen Record on Dell With the Zight Chrome Extension

As a productivity tool, Zight is a Chrome extension, so you can record your screen easily within your Chrome workflows. Once you install and enable the extension (pin it at the top bar, too!), recording the screen is as easy as pie.

Here’s how:

  1. Click Record, and choose your recording preferences. As with the app, you can record the Screen Only, Screen & Cam, or Cam Only. In addition, you want to turn on the mic and camera if you’ll be using them.
  2. If you choose the Screen Only and Screen & Cam options, you will get a pop-up window that asks you to choose more recording preferences. For instance, you can opt to record a single Chrom tab, a window, or the entire screen. When you select, Zight will ask if you want to share, which means you can start recording.
  3. You can pause the recording, restart it, or delete it altogether.
  4. When done, click Stop Sharing, and the video will be uploaded to the cloud. You can continue editing it there.

3. How to Edit and Share Your Screen Recording on Zight

When you finish recording your Dell screen, the videos will be uploaded to your Zight dashboard, where you will get even more editing options. For instance, you can edit your video by trimming sections, splitting and merging sections, adding filters, and cropping.

In addition, you can add the video to your Favorites list or to a collaboration Collection. You can also set your access settings and allow comments and reactions. If you want to upload the video to a platform like YouTube or just want to save it on your computer, click the Download button

But, you can save your Dell laptop storage space by storing this video in your Zight cloud account.

Even better, you can send the video link to recipients who may not even be using Zight. They will be able to view it online as long as they have the internet. You can share your video directly to platforms like Trello, Asana, and Slack or embed it in an email. Zight also supports uploading videos as HTML files for integration into websites.

How to Record Screen on a Dell Laptop Using Built-in Windows Tools

A Dell laptop runs on the Windows OS, so this means you can access the free screen recording tools for Windows. The best ones are the Xbox Game Bar, Windows Snipping Tool, and Microsoft Powerpoint. Here’s how to use each:

We’ve also written about how to capture powerful screenshots using Windows shortcuts. We bet you might need to grab a still image from the video you’re recording even as you choose the best app to screen record on Windows!

1. Windows Game Bar

The Xbox Game Bar is a native feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11, designed primarily for recording gameplay. It’s quite handy for other quick screen recordings. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Before starting, ensure that the Xbox Game Bar is enabled. Go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and toggle on “Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.”
  2. Press the Windows key + G on your keyboard to open the Xbox Game Bar. You should see an overlay with several widgets related to gaming features, such as capturing, audio controls, and PC performance monitoring.
  3. To record your screen, ensure the window you want to record is open – you can record the entire screen. Then, look for the Capture widget. Navigate to the left side of the Game Bar overlay, and you find different options – the Camera icon is for capturing Windows screenshots, and the circle with the dot inside is the screen recorder that you should click. Alternatively, you can quickly start recording by pressing the Windows key + Alt + R.

Manage your screen recorder as follows:

  • You can stop your screen recording by clicking the “Stop recording” button in the Capture widget or pressing Windows key + Alt + R again.
  • Another important step: if you want to record audio, turn on the microphone option in the Capture widget before or during recording. Just click the microphone icon next to the screen recording icon to toggle it on or off. If on, you will use the native mic on your laptop, but Game Bar should detect an external mic you might be connected to.

Once you finish, the recorded video file is automatically saved to your computer. You can find your recordings in the “Videos” folder under “Captures,” unless you have configured a different save location in the Xbox Game Bar settings.

You can customize your game bar settings on Dell, such as changing the default save location or setting up different keyboard shortcuts. Go to Settings > Gaming > Captures. Here, you can adjust video quality, frame rate, and more according to your preferences.

2. Snipping Tool (Windows 11 Only)

If your Dell laptop is running on Windows 11, the Snipping Tool will allow you to capture static screenshots and also record screen. Here’s how:

  1. Click the Windows Key to bring up the Start Menu. Then, type snipping tool and open it. You can also press the Windows logo key + Shift + R to launch.
  2. Click the “New” button and select the “Record option.
  3. Use your mouse to click and drag the rectangular area of the screen you want to record. It can be just a tiny part or the entire screen. When you let go of the mouse, the Snipping Tool will start a 3-second timer and then start recording.
  4. Once done, click “Stop,” the recorded video will be saved in your Videos folder.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to record audio with the Snipping Tool yet. You can also only save the file as MP4, and you cannot set a shortcut to start recording on the Snipping Tool directly.

3. Using PowerPoint

The final built-in screen recorder you can use on Dell is Microsoft PowerPoint. Yes, the software is designed for the best presentations, but by now, we all need powerful videos accompanying presentations. Here is how to screen record:

  1. Launch the PowerPoint application. You can start a new presentation or open an existing one.
  2. Navigate to the “Insert” tab on the Ribbon, then click “Screen Recording”. A control dock appears at the top of your screen. Click and drag your mouse to select the area you want to record. You can also select the entire screen by pressing the Windows logo key + Shift + F.
  3. Once you’ve selected the area, click “Record”. The recording will begin after a 3-second countdown. During recording, PowerPoint will capture both video and audio by default. You can disable these in the control dock if needed.
  4. To stop the recording, hover your mouse at the top middle of the screen to bring up the control dock and click “Stop”. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut Windows key + Shift + Q.
  5. The video recording will be embedded in your slide, and you can also save it as a separate file by right-clicking the video frame and selecting “Save Media as.”

Note: You can only screen record with PowerPoint 2013 and later versions. You need a third-party screen recording tool if you have an earlier version.

Best Tips for Screen Recording on a Dell Laptop

Whether you want to use the native screen recorders or the more powerful and versatile third-party app, you can d a few things to ensure you record high quality videos that would be ideal for professional settings. You can consider the following tips:

  • Ensure your desktop is free of unnecessary icons and open applications. A clutter-free background provides a more professional appearance and focuses the viewer’s attention on the relevant content.
  • Use a high-quality microphone to capture clear audio, which is particularly important for tutorials or presentations where clear communication is key.
  • Choose the recording software that best fits your needs. Consider factors like ease of use, annotating and editing capabilities, and file format support.
  • Always review and edit your recordings to remove any unnecessary parts. This enhances the overall quality and professionalism of your final video.

Wrapping Up

Finally! Now you know how to record your screen on your Dell laptop. You can use the native tools available: The Snipping Tool (if you have Windows 11), the Xbox Game Bar, or Microsoft PowerPoint. The process is fairly easy; you mostly just prepare your window or page, hit the record button, and start recording. You can then save the video in your ideal file location.

But if you want a professional-looking screen recording, we recommend using Zight. You get a free trial and can record different types of videos, including full-screen, or select a region. You can also record your webcam with the screen recording, and Zight supports different video file formats like MP4, MOV, and WMV.

So, wait no more. Get Zight today and enjoy a tool that meets all your screen recording needs on your Dell laptop!

Videos recorded through the Zight extension can reach up to 720p (1280×720 pixels) in quality. However, this can differ based on certain factors specific to your Chromebook, such as your laptop’s screen resolution, the strength of your internet connection, and the quality of your webcam.

Step 4: Start Recording

After setting your preferences, hit the “Start recording” button. You’ll see a countdown from 3-2-1 before your screen recording kicks off. Keep an eye on the recording timer in the toolbar, where you’ll also find options to annotate, pause, or finish your recording.

2. Built-in Screen Recording Tool

Google implemented a built-in screen recording feature in Chrome OS, simplifying the video recording of your Chromebook screen. This native tool enables you to record your screen with audio seamlessly, eliminating the necessity for extra software or browser extensions.

The Screen Capture tool is one of the default screen recording tools available on Chrome OS 89 or newer versions. The built-in screen recorder provides basic recording functionality and is ideal for users who prefer a straightforward approach to screen recording. Here’s a guide on how to use the built-in screen recorder on your Chromebook:

Step 1: Click on the right corner of the taskbar, where you will find the Wi-Fi, Battery, and Time options. Click on this area to open a menu with various options.

Step 2: In the “Quick Settings panel” pop-up window that shows up, click on the “Screen capture” option at the bottom middle of your screen. Look for and select “Screen capture.” Alternatively, you can access the capture tool by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Show Windows. After opening the tool, take a moment to explore its features.

Step 3: Switch between screen capture and recording modes by toggling the option at the bottom left corner of the toolbar, ensuring you’re prepared to begin screen recording whenever needed.

Locate and click on the screen record icon, the second icon on the left. You’ll then be presented with three recording options:

  • Fullscreen– Captures the entire screen
  • Partial screen– Records a specific area by clicking and dragging the cursor
  • Window– Record a particular window, such as a Google Chrome tab

Step 4: After choosing one of the above recording options, you can start recording by clicking the Record button. To screen record with the microphone, tap the Settings icon toward the right corner of this toolbar to display a “Record microphone” toggle switch option for your videos.

Step 5: To stop the recording, click the red Stop icon in the bottom right corner of the taskbar, next to Wi-Fi, Battery, and Time. After completing the screen recording, you’ll receive a notification, and by default, the system will save the recording in the Downloads folder. However, if you wish to share or view your screen recording immediately, you can double-click the file saved in the WEBM format.

Although using the screen recording feature on Chromebook is simple, it saves recordings in WEBM format, and sharing them with other Chromebook users is seamless—they can view them without issues. Alternatively, you can convert the videos to MP4 or suggest the other user install VLC, a program capable of playing WEBM files. VLC is versatile, supports various file formats, and is accessible as an open-source download.

3. Screen Record on Chromebook Using Screencast

If you’re using Chrome OS version 103 or higher, you’re in luck! Your Chromebook comes with a handy tool called the Screencast app, which won’t cost you a dime. It’s perfect when you need to record your screen and add a few quick annotations. Here’s how to make the most of it:

Step 1: Open the app launcher and find the Screencast application. Look for the ‘+ New Screencast’ option at the top left corner, and you’ll see the toolbar at the bottom of your screen.

Step 2: Decide how to record: Full Screen, Partial Area, or a Specific Window. Then, remember to click on the ‘Settings’ icon to toggle the ‘Microphone’ to record audio.

Step 3: Once your settings are proper, hit the red ‘Record’ icon to start your screen recording adventure. And hey, if you feel like adding some flair, you can add some annotations with the trusty ‘Pen’ icon.

Step 4: After recording your video project, tap the red ‘Stop’ button to finish. You can then save your creation within the Screencast app or share it with the world via a handy link.

4. Using the Keyboard

You can use this method on any Chromebook or ChromeOS desktop with its own keyboard.

Step 1: To take a screenshot on your Chromebook, press the dedicated Screenshot key located on the function row of your keyboard. You can easily identify this key by the camera icon printed on it.

Step 2: Once you’re ready to switch to screen recording mode, press the Screen Record icon in ChromeOS’s screen recording toolbar, which typically appears at the bottom of your screen.

Step 3: Select Screen Record. When you click the video camera icon, you’ll be presented with three screen recording options, all conveniently located in the center of the screen capture toolbar:

  • Record full screen: Capture everything visible on your screen in one go.
  • Record partial screen: Record only a specific portion of your screen by dragging a box around the desired area.
  • Record window: Record just the current browser tab or application window you select.

Before the screen recording begins, a brief countdown will let you prepare.

Your microphone is not activated by default for recording. To enable it, click on Settings and then select Record Microphone.

Step 4: To end your recording session, click Stop screen recording, which can be found in the ChromeOS taskbar.

5. Using Keyboard Shortcuts

The keyboard shortcut method is an excellent way to swiftly capture the screen you need. However, if you wish to customize the screen size during recording, you’ll need to follow a few additional steps:

Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift + Show all Windows (the rectangular icon typically found on the right side of your Chromebook keyboard, featuring two vertical lines).

Note: If you can’t locate the ‘Show all Windows’ option on your Chromebook keyboard, press Ctrl + Shift + F5 to initiate the recording directly.

Step 2: In the menu at the bottom of the toolbar, click the ‘Screen Record’ option.

Step 3: Choose your preferred screen recording option: Full Screen, Partial Screen, or Window — and the screen recording will commence automatically.

Step 4: Once you have finished recording, click the ‘Stop Recording’ icon to conclude the ongoing screen recording.

Chrome OS will save the screen recording to your download folder by default. Additionally, a notification will appear after you’ve completed the screen recording- click it to open the recording on your Chromebook.

The post How to Screenshot on Asus Laptop: 6 Simple Ways appeared first on Zight.

]]>
Why screenshot? Well, the list of reasons is simply endless. A screenshot is a digital snapshot of what is visible on your laptop screen at a given moment.

It’s an incredibly useful tool, whether you’re saving a memorable conversation, capturing an image of an error message to communicate with developers, or preserving the high score from your latest gaming session!

We want to show you how to take screenshots on an Asus laptop to enhance your asynchronous communication and workplace productivity – and ensure you have records of important information with just a few keystrokes or clicks.

Here are six simple ways to take a screenshot on an Asus laptop with shortcuts:

1. The Best Way to Capture an Asus Laptop Screenshot: Zight!

Zight provides a sophisticated yet user-friendly solution for capturing screenshots on your Asus/Windows laptop. While native tools are straightforward, they often lack advanced features and flexibility.

Here’s how to screenshot on Asus laptop with Zight:

  1. Sign up by visiting the Zight website. Click “Sign Up Free” to create an account.
  2. After signing up, download the Zight app for your Asus laptop and install the Google Chrome extension to enhance your browser capture capabilities.

To capture a screenshot with the Zight app:

  1. Press Alt + Shift + 5, or open the app and click Screenshot
  2. Choose between capturing a full screen or a specific region. Drag your cursor over the desired region if you choose the latter option.

To use the Chrome extension:

  1. Click Screenshot.
  2. Then, select the region you want to capture as follows:
    • Press Space to capture what’s visible on your browser.
    • Press E to capture the entire browser window.
    • Press D to capture everything visible on your desktop.
  3. Once you capture, the screenshot will automatically upload to the cloud, where you can add annotations, crop, and more!

Why Use Zight?

We could think of many reasons why not to use native screenshot tools and, instead, use Zight.

For instance, Zight is compatible with Asus laptops – you only need to download the app for Windows and get the Chrome extension.

Here are more reasons you will love using Zight:

1. Easy Sharing

Want to share the screenshot with your teams? Just copy the link and paste it directly on Slack, Trello, or Asana message boards. That’s not all. You can even share this link via email, text, WhatsApp, or social media—the choice is yours.

What’s so good about it is that your recipient does not need to download the image—they don’t even need to be using Zight! They will be able to view it online as long as the link exists.

You can set who can view and interact with the link and how long it lasts before it expires under Access Settings.

2. Cloud Storage

All screenshots will be stored in the cloud right after capture (you can still download and save them on your Asus PC!)

When the image uploads to the cloud, Zight will also open it on your default desktop. Click the Annotate button, and you can add text, arrows, lines, ellipses, rectangles, highlights, and paths.

  • Pro Tip: These annotations are superb for step-by-step instructions (especially the path with when you add a number marker – under Sticker). You can also change the background of your screenshot, add emojis, crop, or redact sensitive information.

3. Analytics

Here is one area where your native tool will not help, especially if you capture a screenshot for marketing purposes or customer support.

You need to understand how many people viewed the image to be able to adjust your strategy for better reach! Zight is your best tool for tracking analytics, and you can see the numbers live and get notifications on the app.

4. Collaboration

Screenshots eliminate the back-and-forth correspondence at work—where you send instructions via text, and your recipient has to follow up with you for clarifications and collaboration via text as well. It’s a boring loop you can forget when you use Zight.

With the software, snap a screenshot, annotate it with text for clear instructions, and share it. If there’s a need for more clarity, your recipient can leave a comment under the image (you will be notified immediately—a time saver!).

For even better collaboration, you can encourage your recipient to get Zight, and they, too, can annotate the screenshot to improve communication and clarity!

2. Asus Laptop Screenshots Using Print Screen

The most straightforward native method to take screenshots on Windows is the Print Screen (PrtScn) button. This key is usually found in the top row between the Pause Break key and the Insert key. Here’s how to use it:

i) Full-Screen Asus Screenshot

When you need to capture everything on your screen:

  1. Press the ‘PrtScn’ key. This captures the entire screen.
  2. Open an image editing software (such as Microsoft Paint), and press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot. Save the file as desired.

ii) Capture the Entire Screen and Save the Image Directly to Your PC

Here’s how to capture and save a screenshot in one go:

  1. Ensure that everything you want to capture is visible on your screen.
  2. Press the Windows key + PrtScn simultaneously. Your screen will briefly dim to indicate that a screenshot has been taken.
  3. Navigate to the Pictures library in your computer’s file explorer. Inside, you will find a folder named Screenshots.
  4. Open the Screenshots folder to access the image.

Quick Tip: Screenshots are automatically named by the order in which they were taken.

iii) To capture an Active Window Using PrtScn

Want to only capture one window?

  1. Ensure the window you want to capture is active.
  2. Press Alt + PrtScn together. This captures just the active window.
  3. Open an image editing program, paste the screenshot using Ctrl + V, and save the image.

3. Screen Capture on Asus Laptop Using Snip & Sketch

Snip & Sketch is a powerful screenshot tool integrated into Windows to enhance your screen capture capabilities. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Press the Windows key + Shift + S. This will dim your screen and bring up the Snip & Sketch selection bar at the top of your screen.
  2. You can choose your snip type as follows:
    • Rectangular Snip: Click and drag to form a rectangle around the area you want to capture.
    • Freeform Snip: Draw a freeform shape around the area you want to capture.
    • Window Snip: Select a window to capture that specific window.
    • Full-screen Snip: Captures the entire screen.
  3. After choosing your snip type, use your mouse to select the area or window you want to capture. Release the mouse button to take the screenshot.
  4. The screenshot will automatically be copied to your clipboard, and a notification will appear. Click the notification to open the screenshot.
  5. You can edit, annotate, or highlight key areas directly within the tool.
  6. Save the screenshot by clicking the floppy disk icon, choosing your desired file format, and selecting the save location.

4. Capture Screenshots on an Asus Laptop with the Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool is another straightforward (and free!) software for capturing screenshots on all Windows laptops. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Windows logo button or click Start and type “Snipping Tool.” Select it from the list to open.
  2. Click “Mode” to choose the type of snip you want to perform. You can capture a free-form area, a rectangle area, a specific window, or the entire screen. You can also select a Delay timer if you need time to prepare the screen!
  3. Click “New,” and the screen will fade slightly. You will then be able to create your snip based on the selected mode. Drag your cursor around the area you want to capture.
  4. After capturing the snip, it will appear in the Snipping Tool window. You can use the built-in tools to annotate, highlight, or erase parts of the screenshot. Save the screenshot by clicking the save icon.

Pro Tip: For the best editing, click Edit with Paint 3D in the Snipping Tool window and use the software to add text, shapes, and so much more.

You can also set a Snipping Tool shortcut for quicker use:

  • Press the Windows logo key or click Start.
  • Type “Snipping Tool” in the Start menu, then select “Open File Location.” Right-click the Snipping Tool shortcut, choose “Properties,” and navigate to the “Shortcut key” box.
  • Input a memorable keyboard combination, such as Ctrl + Shift + S, to launch the Snipping Tool easily in the future.
  • Click “Apply” to set the shortcut.

5. Snap Screenshots On Asus Laptop Using the Xbox Game Bar

The Xbox Game Bar is a versatile tool primarily designed for gaming but also excellent for snapping screenshots on your Asus laptop. This feature is especially useful for capturing gameplay moments or any active applications.

Here’s how you can utilize the Xbox Game Bar to take screenshots:

  1. Press the Windows key + G to bring up the game bar overlay while in a game or any other application.
  2. Click the “Capture” widget designed specifically for screenshots and video recordings.
  3. Click on the camera icon within the Capture widget to take a screenshot. The image captures the active window or the entire screen if no window is active.
  4. Once captured, your screenshot is automatically saved. You can view, share, or delete your screenshots directly through the Xbox Game Bar or find them in the Videos library under the Captures folder.

6. Screen Capture On Asus laptop Using the Windows Steps Recorder

The Windows Steps Recorder (Problem Steps Recorder) is a unique Windows tool that captures screenshots and records a description of what you’re doing on your Asus laptop. You can use it for troubleshooting and instructional purposes, as it allows you to capture a series of actions rather than just a single image.

Here’s how to capture screenshots on your Asus laptop:

  1. Press Windows or click the Start menu, and type “Steps Recorder” into the search bar. Alternatively, click the Windows key + R, paste psr.exe into the box, and click Enter.
  2. Click “Start Record.” From this point, every action you take will be recorded with an accompanying screenshot for each click. Steps Recorder will capture a screenshot each time you click your mouse, along with detailed annotations describing your steps. You can also add comments on various clicks to add even more value to your captures.
  3. When you’re finished, click “Stop Record.” Steps Recorder will compile everything into a single zipped MHTML file, which you can save, share, or review. This file will contain all your screenshots and detailed descriptions of each step.
  4. After reviewing your recording, you can save it by clicking “Save.” Choose a location on your laptop to store the file.

Wrapping Up…

Those are the different ways you can capture, save, and share a screenshot on Asus laptop. We hope you can now experiment with the native tools to see which is faster, but if they all fall short, you can get Zight for all capture features in a single app.

Communication has evolved so much that it is more likely you need to record your screen fast – regardless of the device you use. Sometimes, it is work-related, and you need to explain a rather detailed process in just a few moments. Other times, it is a funny moment or text you would rather record as you see it.

Either way, we recommend using reliable screen recording software like Zight. With it, you get one intuitive app to screen record on iPhone, Windows, and Mac laptops.

  • Record your screen
  • Annotate your videos with text, arrows, lines, and blur
  • Instantly share with a link

We have previously discussed how to screen record on Mac and Windows, so today, let’s also show you how to record your iPhone screen.

Read on for the steps for using Zight or your native screen recording feature!

1. How to Record iPhone Screen Using Zight

Here’s the truth – almost all devices (laptops, desktops, and smartphones) have a native screen recorder. It usually works just fine until you need additional features.

Most, if not all, native screen recorders have limitations when you want to record and share a long video file. For this reason, it is best if you find a tool that offers fast screen recording and easy sharing features. Zight is the best!

If you want to screen record on an iPhone, the process is simple and convenient.

  1. You want to get the Zight app for iOS. Go to Appstore and download the compatible app.
  2. Once downloaded, allow Zight to send you notifications – this way, you will be able to track your video’s analytics once you record. For instance, you will get notified when someone watches or interacts with your video.
  3. You can also go through the short tutorial about what Zight does and how to use the app. Click Continue.
  4. You can now log in to your Zight account. If you don’t have one, click Sign Up for Free. You can use your Google account to save time.
  5. To screen record, click the + button and then select Screen Recording.
  6. Record your screen, and once you’re done, Zight will create a link for it and upload it to the cloud.
  7. You can then share the link with anyone by simply pasting it to the chat board. Alternatively, you can also access the link from your Drops list, copy it, and then paste it.

The good thing about using Zight is that you will always have access to your screen recordings in the Drops list. Similarly, your recipients will always access the recordings as long as the links exist. Even better, they don’t have to be using Zight – they just need to open the link on their browser to watch!

2. How to Screen Record on iPhone Using the Native App

To screen record on your iPhone using the native app, you can follow these straightforward steps:

Before you start, you have to enable screen recording as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to “Control Center” then “More Controls.”
  3. Find “Screen Recording” and tap the plus (+) icon next to it to add it to the Control Center.

After enabling the screen recording option:

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the Screen Recording button, which will then start a three-second countdown before beginning the recording. At this point, you can turn on Do Not Disturb so you don’t receive notifications while recording.
  3. Your iPhone will start recording everything that appears on your screen. You can navigate through apps or scroll through pages, and all your actions will be captured.
  4. To stop recording, you can either tap the red clock icon in your status bar at the top of your screen and then tap “Stop” or open Control Center again and tap the red Record button.
  5. Once you stop recording, the video will be saved automatically to your Photos app, where you can view, edit, or share it.

These are straightforward steps to record your screen, but note that you’ll only be able to record audio from your iPhone. If you wanted to record external microphone audio;

  1. Enable screen recording, open the control center, and tap the screen recording button.
  2. Long press the Screen Recording button.
  3. Tap the Microphone icon to turn it on, which will then be highlighted in red, indicating that it’s active. This will enable the recording of external sounds along with your screen.
  4. Tap Start Recording and repeat the steps from above.

This process will capture both the internal sounds from the device and any external audio through the microphone, such as your voice or other ambient sounds.

For recording professional-level audio, such as podcasts or music, you can connect an external microphone to your iPhone. Ensure that the microphone is compatible with your device, and if necessary, use an adapter (like a lightning to 3.5mm jack or USB-C adapter, depending on your iPhone model).

Once connected, the external microphone should be recognized automatically, and you can follow the steps above to include its audio in your screen recordings.

How to Share Your Screen Recording on iPhone

To share a screen recording from your iPhone, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone. Navigate to the “Albums” tab, scroll down to “Media Types”, and select “Screen Recordings”. Here, you’ll find all your screen recordings.
  2. Tap on the screen recording you want to share. This will open it in full-screen mode.
3. While viewing the recording, tap the share icon (a square with an arrow pointing upwards). This will open a menu with various sharing options.
  4. You can choose to send the recording via messages, email, or social media platforms. You can also save it to a cloud storage service or other apps that accept video files.

Pro Tip: Before sharing, you might want to edit the recording to trim unnecessary parts or enhance it. You can do this directly in the Photos app, where basic editing tools are available.

Third-party apps like Zight might be required for more advanced editing. Luckily, it’s also easy. You can upload your screen recording to Zight and edit your video as you see fit.

Best Tips for Flawless Screen Recording on iPhone

Screen recording on your iPhone can be a game-changer for capturing dynamic content, from memorable FaceTime calls to high-stakes gaming sessions. Yet, achieving a flawless recording is not always as straightforward as it seems.

Technical hitches, unexpected notifications, or simply running out of storage can turn what should be an easy task into a frustrating ordeal. But with a few expert tips, you can navigate these challenges:

  • Free up space: Screen recordings can consume a significant amount of storage, especially if they’re lengthy. Ensure you have ample space by deleting unnecessary files or transferring them off your device.
  • Enable Do Not Disturb: to avoid disruptive notifications during recording.
  • Adjust the brightness: Set your screen brightness to a consistent level that is not too harsh on the eyes yet clear enough to capture detailed visuals.
  • Manage sound settings: Decide if you want to include audio in your recording. If capturing external sounds or voiceovers, ensure the microphone is turned on before you start recording.
  • For professional-looking recordings, stability is key. Keep your iPhone steady with a tripod, or place your device on a stable surface to avoid shaky videos. This is particularly important for training videos or presentation recordings.
  • A little planning goes a long way, as well. Create a good video script, especially for instructional videos or demonstrations. This will ensure a smooth, efficient recording without unnecessary pauses or errors.
  • Use the editing tools within the Photos app to trim the start and end of your recording, removing any unneeded sections.

Wrapping Up

We hope the steps and tips above will help you improve your iPhone screen recording. While you can use the native screen recording feature, we highly recommend using Zight to give you even more options – especially editing post-recording. With Zight, you can annotate and edit your videos better than you can on the native app.

Step 1: Download and Install Zight

Visit the Zight website using your Surface Pro’s web browser. Look for the download link for the Zight screenshot app and click on it. Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded file (usually in the Downloads folder) and double-click to start the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Zight app on your Surface Pro.

Step 2: Open Zight

After the installation, you can open the Zight app by clicking on its icon in the Start menu or searching for it using the Windows search bar. Click on the app icon to launch Zight.

Alternatively, use the convenient shortcut for quick access. The default shortcut for Windows (including Surface Pro) is Ctrl + Shift + 5.

Step 3: Adjust Settings (Optional)

Upon opening Zight, you may want to customize its settings to suit your preferences better. Look for an option like “Settings” or “Preferences” within the Zight interface. Here, you can adjust settings such as the default file format for saving screenshots (e.g., PNG, JPG), the default save location, keyboard shortcuts, and other app customization options.

Step 4: Capture Screenshot

With Zight open and ready to use, navigate to the content on your Surface Pro you want to capture in the screenshot. Once you have the desired content on your screen, decide on your capture frame, and then capture the screenshot using Zight.

Zight typically offers multiple methods for capturing screenshots. These methods might include options like capturing:

  • The entire screen
  • A specific window
  • A desired area

Step 5: Edit and Annotate (Optional)

After capturing the screenshot, Zight may provide tools for editing and annotating the image. Using the screenshot annotation tool, you can add text, emojis, arrows, and shapes to your captured screenshot. If you want to protect sensitive information, you can set a “privacy and expiration” option to control the access and expiration of your screenshots.

Step 6: Save or Share

After capturing the screenshot, it will be automatically saved, and then Zight will generate a link that you can immediately share. For users who prioritize image quality, Zight can save your screenshots in PNG. Enable the PNG option for a higher-quality image.

Additionally, you can effortlessly share your screen captures in various online collaboration tools such as Google Docs, JIRA, Trello, Zendesk, and more!

Step 7: Review and Manage Screenshots

After saving or sharing the screenshot, take a moment to review it to ensure it meets your requirements. Zight’s functionality extends beyond taking screenshots. The application also allows you to screen record with audio and without, which can help create tutorials, demonstrations, instructional videos, and how-to videos. Additionally, you can create animated GIFs to capture short sequences of actions on your screen.

2. Using Hardware Buttons (Without a Keyboard)

For most 2-in-1 devices, such as the Microsoft Surface, you can take a screenshot using the hardware buttons. This is an excellent method for using your Surface Pro device as a tablet without attaching it to the typing cover. Taking screenshots is slightly different for Surface Pro 4 and later models compared to the Surface Pro 3 and earlier versions. We have listed the different ways depending on the device you won.

For Surface RT/2, Surface Pro/2, Surface 3, and Pro 3 models

  • Press and hold the Windows logo key on the front of the device.
  • While holding down the Windows logo button, simultaneously press the volume-down button on the side of the device.
  • The screen will briefly dim and then return to its normal brightness, indicating a screenshot has been captured successfully.

For Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book models

Surface Pro4 windows and volume down button

In these models, there are no Windows logo button as a power button beside the volume buttons replaces it. The method for taking a screenshot involves a slight adjustment:

  • Press and hold the power button.
  • While holding down the power button, simultaneously press the volume up button on the side of the device.

The screen will dim and return to bright again to let you know a screenshot has been captured. All the screenshots captured using this method will be saved in Screenshots under the Pictures library.

3. With Keyboard

Surface Type Cover keyboards are suitable for people who want to type extensively on their Surface Pro devices and prefer the feel and feedback of a physical keyboard.

When you have a Surface Type Cover connected, you can capture screenshots using the standard method by pressing the PrtSc (Print Screen) key on the keyboard. This can be done in two ways:

On the Surface Pro 4/(2017) Type Cover, Surface Book/2, and Surface Laptop keyboards

Microsoft has introduced a dedicated PrtSn (Print Screen) key on the keyboard for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book models. Similar to the standard keyboard layout, you have two options for capturing a screenshot.

Option 1: Capture all screens and store them in the Windows Clipboard.

  • Press the PrtSn key to take a screenshot.
  • Paste to your preferred programs like Paint or Word.

Option 2: Capture the active window and store it in the Windows Clipboard.

  • Press the Alt + PrtSn key to screenshot the active window.
  • Paste to your preferred programs like Paint or Word.

For Surface RT/2, Surface Pro/2/3, Surface 3, or newer Type Cover

The following screenshot methods also work on newer models like the Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro (2017), Surface Book, Surface Book 2, and Surface Laptop. Since older Surface Type covers don’t have a dedicated print screen windows key, you can take screenshots using particular key combinations.

Option 1: Capture all screens and save them to a PNG file

Press and hold down the Fn and Windows keys, then press the Space key (Fn + Win + Space). The screen will dim briefly and go back to bright. The screenshots captured using this method will be saved in the screenshots folder under the Pictures library.

Option 2: Capture all entire screens and store them in the Windows Clipboard

Press and hold down the Fn key, then press the Space key (Fn + Space). Then, paste it into your preferred program, such as Paint or Word.

Option 3: Capture the active window and store it in the Windows Clipboard

Press and hold down the Fn and Alt keys, then press the Space key (Fn + Alt + Space).

Then, paste it into your preferred program like Word or Paint

4. With Surface Pen

If you don’t have a Surface Pro keyboard but have a Surface pen, you can still capture screenshots easily using a stylus.

With the Windows 10 Anniversary update rollout came an app named Screen Sketch. This tool lets you quickly capture your screen with a single click and then jump right into editing it. You can draw on the screenshot, crop it to size, and use other handy tools, all within the same app.

Using the Surface Pen with this function, you can take a screenshot. To use this method, follow the steps below:

  • Ensure the Surface Pen is connected to your Surface Pro
  • Activate the screen sketch function by double-clicking the eraser button on the top of your Surface Pen.
  • On your display, you will see that a screenshot has been taken
  • Now, you can edit, crop, and save the screenshot by clicking the “Save as” button at the top right of the screen.

5. Using a Snipping Tool

Microsoft's Snipping Tool

An alternative method for capturing a screenshot on the Surface Pro device is through the Snipping Tool, an integrated screenshot software in Windows that offers better controls, functionalities and features compared to the previously mentioned methods. To use the Microsoft snipping tool, do this:

  • Open the Start menu and type “Snipping Tool.
  • You can also open the Microsoft Snipping tool by opening the Start menu and locating the Snipping Tool under the Windows Accessories folder.
  • Once it appears, choose the drop-down menu under New and select Full-Screen Snip (you can also choose Rectangular Snip or Free-Form Snip).
  • After you select your desired area to take a screenshot, it will display in a new window. You can draw or highlight screenshots in this window before saving them as JPEG, PNG, GIF, or HTML files.

6. Using the Windows Snip and Sketch Tool

In recent Windows 10 updates, Microsoft has introduced a contemporary tool named Snip & Sketch. This tool lets you quickly annotate screenshots, photos, and other images using your pen, touch, or mouse. You can then save, paste, or share them with other applications. To use this tool for capturing a screenshot, follow these steps:

  • Open the Start menu, type “Snip & Sketch” directly into the search bar
  • Alternatively, you can find the Snip & Sketch app by navigating the Start menu.
  • Once the tool is loaded, click “New” and select “Snip now.” You can then choose from three options- Free form, Full-screen, and Rectangular.
  • Choose the area of the screen you want to capture.
  • A new Snip & Sketch window will appear with the captured image. Annotate, draw or highlight any elements you desire on the screenshot.
  • To save the screenshot as a file, click the “Save” icon. Alternatively, click the “Copy” icon to transfer the screenshot to the Windows clipboard for pasting into other applications.

Conclusion- What is The Best Method To Take A Screenshot on Your Surface Pro

Here’s how I’d rank the methods to take a screenshot on Surface Pro based on what I use daily:

  1. The Dedicated Screenshot Tool- Zight
  2. Snipping Tool
  3. Windows Snip and Sketch Tool
  4. Hardware Buttons (Without a Keyboard)
  5. The Keyboard
  6. Surface Pen shortcut

In my opinion, the first three methods are the best. The first is the best because it’s an all-in-one tool with additional features, but if you want a straightforward process for taking a screenshot on Microsoft Surface Pro, then the next two are the best.

Like different flavors of ice cream, there are a lot of different file formats that you can use to save an image—and each one offers its own unique benefits and drawbacks. If you take and save many screenshots (either for business purposes, content creation, or anything in between), it’s important to choose the right file format for your purposes.

But what is the best quality screenshot format? The answer depends on several factors, including things like the type of screenshots you are capturing, their file size compared to the amount of storage space you have available, and more. To help you choose the best image format for your screenshots, here’s a breakdown of all the key factors you’ll want to consider.

Best Quality Screenshot Format

There are so many different ways to save an image file, and that is because different file formats offer different benefits. Below are four of the most popular file formats for saving a screenshot—and the pros and cons you need to know about each one.

PNG Format: Ideal for High-Quality Images

When you want sharp detail and high resolution, PNG is arguably the best image file format. As a lossless compression format, PNG compression preserves all your image’s fine details and clarity. This makes the PNG format a great choice if you want to capture the highest—quality screenshots possible—just remember that PNG files will take up more storage space than other, more efficient formats (like JPEG).

JPEG Format: Balancing Quality and File Size

The JPEG format strikes a good balance between image quality and file size. While it may not offer quite the same resolution and fine detail as PNG, JPEG images are high-quality enough for most users and applications while being a much more storage-space-friendly option to boot. Another benefit of this file format is that it allows you to adjust compression levels. This means you’ll decide how you wish to balance file size and image quality.

GIF Format: Suitable for Simple Graphics

The GIF format is great for capturing animations and simple graphics. While it isn’t often used for static screenshots, GIFs excel in a few cases. Since GIFs are designed to store multiple frames within a single file, they let you turn your screenshots into short animations or sequences. However, image quality with GIFs isn’t always the best; they have a small file size and a limited color palette, which can result in reduced image quality compared to other formats.

BMP Format: Basic and Uncompressed Format

BMP is a basic and uncompressed image format that isn’t used much anymore. While this file format isn’t optimized for efficient storage and sharing, there are a few niche applications where you may want to save your screenshots as a BMP file. Like PNG files, the BMP format is a lossless compression format, which means that it perfectly preserves image quality. The BMP format is also commonly used for archiving image files to ensure no image data is lost or manipulated.

Screen Resolution and Image Quality

When it comes to determining how a screenshot will appear when displayed on a device, its file format is only half of the equation—the other half is the screen resolution of the device it’s being displayed on. To make sure that your screenshots look like you want them to no matter what device they’re viewed on, here’s what you need to know about the relationship between screen resolution and image quality:

Resolution Considerations for Screenshot Formats

Devices with higher-resolution screens will display sharper images, regardless of the file format you choose. They are also capable of capturing higher-quality screenshots. Remember that when you take a screenshot, you capture the image exactly as it appears on your device’s screen. If you use a low-resolution device to capture the screenshot, then the image quality will still be impacted even when the image is displayed on other, higher-resolution screens.

Maintaining Image Quality Across Various Devices

So if screenshots appear differently on different devices, how do you maintain image quality no matter what device it’s being viewed on? A helpful place to start is choosing a screenshot app that is designed to capture images at the native resolution of your device. This helps preserve image quality without unnecessary scaling or compression. Another good idea is to test your screenshots across different devices before sharing them. Make sure they maintain their image quality and sharpness across all types of devices and make adjustments as necessary to fix any image quality issues.

Conclusion

Choosing the right file format for your screenshots is a big part of ensuring sharp, high-quality images. Using the right screenshot app is a big part of this as well.

With Zight, you can capture high-quality screenshots and save them in any file format that you choose. Zight captures using your device’s native resolution to ensure that image quality is preserved and maintained across various devices. If you capture, edit, and share many screenshots, using a good screenshot app can offer quite a few benefits. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right screenshot tool for your needs?

In this guide on choosing between screenshot apps, we’ll cover all the important factors to consider to help you find a screenshot app that you will love using!

Different Types of Screenshot Apps

Taking a screenshot may seem like a pretty simple functionality, so it may surprise you that there are several different types of screenshot apps on the market. The first type is built-in system tools; most devices will allow you to take screenshots without downloading a third-party app. However, these tools typically have limited features and functionality and may not be the best choice for someone who plans to capture and edit many screenshots.

That brings us to third-party software, browser extensions, and mobile apps. These three types of screenshot apps comprise the bulk of what’s on the market, and they can come equipped with a wide range of advanced features—such as editing tools, tools for sharing screenshots with others, security features, and more.

A few specialty screenshot apps are available, including automated screenshot tools designed to take screenshots at specific intervals and are often used for creating time-lapse videos. For the purpose of this article, though, we’ll mostly focus on standard screenshot apps.

Compatibility With Devices

The first and perhaps most important consideration when choosing a screenshot app is making sure it will be compatible with your device. For example, some screenshot apps only work for Mac or Windows computers, while others are designed exclusively for mobile devices. If you want to use the screenshot app across multiple devices, it’s a good idea to choose a multi-device screenshot app like Zight that is compatible with computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

Pricing Options

Another key consideration when choosing a screen capture app is its cost. Many screenshot apps are free to download and use, while others charge either a one-time fee or an ongoing subscription fee. Many screenshot apps offer a free-to-use version in addition to premium versions that come equipped with additional features. This is helpful since it allows you to try out the app and get a feel for its core functionality before committing to a paid version.

Key Features a Screenshot App Should Have

When deciding how to choose between screenshot apps, there are several key features that you’ll want to prioritize. Whatever app you end up choosing, here are some of the most important features that it should offer:

User Interface, Ease of Navigation, and Customer Support

First and foremost, a screenshot app should be easy to use. One of the big benefits of using a third-party screenshot app is that it is designed to streamline the process of capturing, editing, and sharing screenshots. If the app is clunky and difficult to navigate, then it’s probably not going to save you very much time.

Customer support is also a key consideration. If you choose a well-polished and user-friendly screenshot app like Zight, you shouldn’t run into issues very often. When problems and questions do arise, though, it’s nice to know that the app offers quality support services to get you back on track.

Editing and Annotation Capabilities

One of the biggest benefits of using a screenshot app compared to using your device’s built-in screenshot tools is that screenshot apps often include advanced editing capabilities for editing your screenshot directly within the app. This means you won’t have to download additional software and can capture and edit screenshots without having to switch back and forth between different apps.

As for the editing capabilities you should look for, a well-rounded screenshot tool such as Zight will offer editing features like adding text and stickers, crop and adjust your screenshots, add annotations, and numerous other editing capabilities.

Integration With Other Apps and Platforms

Many screenshot apps are designed to integrate with other apps and platforms for workflows that are even more streamlined and unified. For example, a screenshot app that integrates with a cloud storage platform will allow you to automatically transfer your screenshots to the cloud for convenient and secure storage. You may also wish to integrate your screenshot app with a more advanced photo editing tool for access to editing features that the screenshot app doesn’t offer.

When checking out a screenshot app, be sure to do some research on its integrations; even if you don’t plan to use these integrations right away, they may still be helpful to you in the future.

Conclusion

With so many different screenshot apps on the market, choosing the right one for your needs isn’t always simple. However, by considering things like device compatibility, pricing options, and key features offered, choosing a screenshot app that you will love using shouldn’t be too challenging!

We hope you’ve found this guide on choosing between screenshot apps helpful! If you would like to see for yourself why Zight is one of the top screenshot tools available today, we invite you to sign up for free!

Whether you’re sharing a funny meme, saving an important piece of information, or anything in between, there are many different situations where you may want to take a screenshot of your device’s screen. Depending on the device you’re using, there are also many different ways to do this.

But do you need an app to take a screenshot? In most cases, it isn’t a requirement. That said, you might want to download a screenshot app such as Zight anyway for a few noteworthy reasons!

How to Take Screenshots With Different Devices

Almost every phone, tablet, and computer includes a function for taking screenshots. However, the exact steps you will need to follow depend on the device you are using.

Both iPhones and Android phones allow you to take screenshots by pressing buttons on the side of the phone. For iPhones, you’ll need to press the side button and the volume up button simultaneously, and for Android phones, you’ll need to press the power button and the volume down button simultaneously.

Mac and Windows computers both offer built-in screenshot functionality as well; with a Windows computer, you can take a screenshot by pressing the Windows key + Print Screen key together. On a Mac, you can take a screenshot by pressing the Shift, Command, and 3 keys simultaneously.

So Why Should You Use a Screenshot App?

Given that almost every device includes a function for taking screenshots right out of the box, what is the purpose of screenshot apps? While the answer to “Do I need an app to take a screenshot?” is usually no, there are still several good reasons to download one anyway.

Here are some of the top benefits of using a screenshot app such as Zight compared to using your device’s existing screenshot tools:

Enhanced Features

A high-quality screenshot app will offer many advanced features that you won’t necessarily get with your device’s built-in screenshot tools. For example, features such as annotation tools, cropping, blurring, and the ability to add text or stickers to the screenshot are just a few of the features that screenshot apps like Zight offer beyond the ability to simply capture an image of your screen.

If taking screenshots is the one and only functionality you are looking for, you may not need a screenshot app. However, if you plan to edit your screenshots in any way, then using a screenshot app is the way to go!

Instant Editing

Speaking of editing, screenshot apps not only give you a lot more editing tools and features, but they also streamline the editing process. Here’s how: if you take a screenshot using your device’s built-in functionality, you will then need to save the image and transfer it to an editing app before you can make any changes. With a screenshot app, though, all the tools you need to both take and edit screenshots are included in the same app.

This means you’ll be able to edit your screenshot immediately without opening a separate editing tool. While this might be a relatively small amount of time saved, it can add up quickly if you take and edit a lot of screenshots.

Better Organization

Many screenshot apps (including Zight) offer features to help you keep your screenshots organized. For example, screenshot apps can allow you to add descriptive tags and labels to your screenshots, and you can then search for screenshots on your device by typing in keywords from these tags and labels.

Screenshot apps also let you create folders and albums to organize your screenshots and open a timeline view that displays screenshots chronologically. These organization features make finding the screenshots you need much easier, which can be a big help for anyone who stores a lot of screenshots on their device.

Cloud Integration

Many screenshot apps offer a cloud integration that allows you to upload your screenshots to the cloud automatically—and this offers a few distinct benefits. To start, using cloud storage can help you save storage space on your device. While screenshots may not take up much space compared to video files, the required storage space can still add up if you store hundreds or thousands of images.

Uploading your screenshots to the cloud also makes them accessible from any device. As long as you have your log-in information, you can access your screenshots using your phone, computer, someone else’s computer, or just about any other device that connects to the internet.

Customization Options

Screenshot apps like Zight offer tools for editing and customizing screenshots, but they also allow you to customize the screenshot-taking process itself. This includes customizing settings such as default save locations, file formats, and keyboard shortcuts.

If you like things a certain way or customize your workflows according to preferences, a screenshot app like Zight will offer more freedom than your device’s built-in screenshot tools.

With their sleek design and friendly interface, Chromebooks offer different ways to grab what's on your screen in seconds. Let's get into it.

Have you ever seen something hilarious on a website or needed to grab a quick reminder on your Chromebook, only to realize you have no idea how to capture it? Unlike other devices, Chromebooks with their ChromeOS run the show a little differently when it comes to screenshots. This can be confusing if you’re used to the methods on a Mac or PC.

Nevertheless, capturing your screen on ChromeOS is surprisingly easy and downright fun. This guide will show you all the cool ways to capture what’s on your screen, so keep reading and get ready to screenshot like a pro!

Types of Screenshots a Chromebook Can Capture

Whether you need to capture the whole picture or just a specific detail, a Chromebook can capture different types of screenshots, such as:

1. Full-Screen Snapshot

This is your classic screenshot, grabbing everything displayed on your Chromebook screen. Think of it like taking a picture of your entire desktop, with all the windows and applications open. This is perfect when you want to share what you’re seeing or document the whole layout of your Chromebook.

2. Partial Screenshot

Let’s say you only need a specific part of your screen, like a funny meme or a weird error message. This is where the partial screenshot comes in. It’s like zooming in with your camera to capture a selected area. You can drag your mouse to create a rectangle around the part you want to grab, and voila! The selected part gets saved, leaving out the rest of the clutter.

3. Window Screenshot

Sometimes, you might be working on a specific program or document and want to capture just that window. This screenshot option acts like a window cleaner, grabbing only the content within that particular window and excluding everything else on your screen. It’s a great way to share something specific you’re working on without including any other open applications or your desktop background.

Notably, if you are wondering why we didn’t include scrolling screenshots above, Chromebooks themselves don’t have a built-in way to capture scrolling screenshots. This can be a bummer if you want to grab an entire webpage or a lengthy chat conversation.

Another way to screenshot is to use Chromebook keyboard shortcuts, especially if you want to complete your tasks more quickly.

a). Capture your Entire Screen

  • Press the “Ctrl” and “Show Windows” keys to capture the whole screen.
  • The Show Window button is on the top row of your keyboard, which looks like a rectangle with two lines on the right side. It is the equivalent of using the F5 key on a PC keyboard.
  • Your captured screenshot will be saved to your Downloads folder.

b). Partial Screenshot

Press “Shift,” “Ctrl,” & “Show Windows” keys together.

To find the keyboard shortcuts on your Chromebook, press Ctrl + F and enter what you want to find.

  • Click on the time located at the bottom right corner.
  • Choose “Settings.”
  • Scroll down and click on “Keyboard.”
  • Select “View keyboard shortcuts.”

3. Screenshot on Chromebook Using an External Keyboard

Do you have an External Keyboard? No Problem!

If you’re using a Windows or Mac keyboard not specifically made for Chrome OS, you might find that the usual keyboard shortcuts don’t quite fit due to different key setups.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix! Just hit Ctrl and F5 simultaneously for a full-screen screenshot, or Ctrl, Shift, and F5 together for a partial screen capture.

These Chromebook keyboard shortcuts are universally applicable across all models. However, some Chromebooks feature a dedicated Screen Capture key on the top row of the keyboard.

4. How to Capture a Screenshot on a Chromebook via the Quick Settings Menu

Quick settings

To take a screenshot using the quick settings menu,

Step 1: Find the clock in the lower-right corner of your screen and click on it. This action will bring up your Quick Settings menu.

Step 2: Look for the Screen Capture icon, a circle inside a square, and click on it to launch the Screen Capture toolbar.

Step 3: Within the Screen Capture toolbar, you’ll find an arrangement of icons from left to right, each offering distinct functions:

  • Screen record: Use this option to record videos.
  • Take full-screen screenshots: Capture the entire screen with this option.
  • Take partial screenshots: Select a specific screen portion using the crosshair icon. Click and drag to outline the desired area, then press the Capture button at the center of your screenshot.

Step 4: Choose your screenshot option and take the screenshot.

5. How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook in Tablet Mode

Chromebooks seamlessly convert into tablets, offering a versatile user experience. But how do you capture a screenshot when you’re rocking the tablet mode and your trusty keyboard is absent?

There are two simple methods at your disposal:

Method 1: Button Power

This method is a breeze, requiring just a quick press of two buttons:

  • Find the Power button on the side of your Chromebook. It’s usually the top button.
  • Press Power button and the Volume Down button (located on the side, usually below the Power button) simultaneously.
  • You’ll see a brief animation or a sound indicating a successful screenshot capture.

Method 2: On-Screen Quick Settings

Alternatively, if you want to take a screenshot using a more visual approach, use the on-screen screenshot toolbar:

  • Step 1: Swipe down from the top of your Chromebook screen to display the Quick Settings panel. It might take a moment to get used to the swiping gesture if you’re from a physical keyboard experience.
  • Step 2: Locate the Screenshot button. It usually resembles a camera icon.
  • Step 3: Tap the Screenshot button. Similar to the button method, you’ll see a brief animation or hear a sound confirming the screenshot capture.
  • Step 4: You can find your screenshot in the “Downloads” folder in the Files app.

Bonus Tip: If you’ve taken a screenshot using any Chromebook methods discussed above but can’t find suitable annotation tools for providing clear instructions to your teams, consider using Zight. Open your Zight dashboard, click “Upload,” locate the screenshot in your File Explorer, and upload it to Zight for annotation. Once annotated, you can share it as a link or download it to your computer.

Screen captures, screen grabs, and screenshots – regardless of the term you prefer- are some of those invaluable handy little features in Windows that enable you to capture an image of your laptop. Therefore, knowing how to take screenshots efficiently can significantly enhance your productivity and communication if you’re an HP laptop user.

In light of this, we have listed user-friendly screenshot methods to assist you in effortlessly taking screenshots on your HP laptop, from employing convenient keyboard shortcuts to utilizing built-in tools and even incorporating a professional third-party screenshot program.

Notably, each screenshot method has different steps, but all of them will effectively capture a screenshot on an HP. Let’s look at each in detail.

1. Take a Screenshot on HP Laptop with Zight (Best Method)

The keyboard shortcuts and built-in snipping tools are designed for convenient and swift screen captures on HP computers. Also, sometimes, the shortcut or Print Screen key may fail to function properly on your HP laptop. These default methods may also present limitations in terms of photo editing capabilities.

If you seek a swift screenshot alternative that doesn’t rely on the Print Screen button, consider utilizing a dedicated screen capture tool like Zight. Zight is a free screenshot tool that you can use to capture screenshots within seconds and then swiftly edit and share them, facilitating seamless visual communication for you and your team.

Now, let’s learn how to take a screenshot on an HP computer using Zight.

Step 1: Download and install Zight.

Step 2: Open the Zight icon in the system tray in the lower right-hand of the Windows desktop and select the “Screenshot” option. You can also take a screenshot by pressing Alt + Shift + 5.

Zight

Step 3: Use your mouse to control the snipping tool and select the area on your screen you wish to record, and once done, the screenshot will be captured.

Step 4: Upon capturing your screen, two immediate actions occur:

  • The screenshot is saved to your clipboard as a shareable link.
  • The screenshot link automatically opens in your default browser, where you can annotate and edit it before sharing.

With Zight, you can access diverse editing tools to enhance your screenshots. These tools include marking your image with arrows to highlight key information, underlining or segmenting elements with lines, and utilizing drawing tools such as pens, highlighters, circles, squares, and text layers.

In addition to annotating your screenshot, you can perform various editing actions such as cropping, zooming, redacting sensitive information, and incorporating stickers.

After editing, you can protect your screenshot before sharing it. Zight offers customizable share settings, allowing you to specify who can access the screenshot. By default, the setting may be “Anyone with the link can view,” but for sensitive information, you can adjust this setting.

You can further customize the sharing settings, including options like:

  • Anyone with the link can view
  • Anyone with the link and passcode can view
  • Anyone can view your organization
  • Anyone can edit in your organization
  • Anyone with an email address can view
  • Only specific individuals can view it via email

Additionally, you can set an expiration date for the link based on a certain number of views or a specific expiry date. Moreover, you can enable reactions and comments on the image to foster a collaborative environment before sharing.

One of the standout features of Zight is its seamless sharing capability. Simply share the link with your recipients, and they can view the screenshot directly in their browser without needing a Zight account. For efficient collaboration, you can embed the link in emails, chat forums, Google Docs, Slack, Asana, and more.

Moreover, Zight provides analytics tracking, allowing you to monitor the number of views and engagement metrics.

Pro Tip: Suppose you already took a screenshot with any of the Windows methods we discussed above but can’t find the right annotation tools to leave the best instructions for your teams.

However, if you’re struggling to find the best annotation tools to provide clear instructions to your teams, Zight offers a solution. Here’s a detailed process:

  • Open your Zight dashboard by launching the Zight application.

2. Take Screenshots on an HP Laptop with Keyboard Shortcuts

Capturing screenshots using keyboard shortcuts is a quick and convenient way to capture what’s on your screen without the need for additional software downloads.

Here’s how you can capture the entire screen, a portion of the screen, or an active window using three distinct methods:

I. Capture the Whole Screen of the HP Laptop

This is one of the easiest ways to take a screenshot on HP, and with only a few keystrokes, you will have a screen capture.

Step 1: Press either the “Print Screen” or “PrtScn” key on your keyboard, typically found near the top-right corner and labeled as “PrtScn,” “PrntScrn,” “Print Scr,” or similar. This action captures and stores a screenshot of your entire screen in the clipboard. Notably, if your HP laptop has the “Print Scr” button on the same as Shift, press the Fn key as well (Fn + PrntScrn).

Step 2: Open an image editing program, such as Microsoft Paint or Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Step 3: Paste the screenshot using the “Ctrl + V” keyboard shortcut in the image editing program. This action inserts the screenshot into the editing program, allowing you to edit or save it as a new image file.

Alternatively, you can employ the “Windows + PrtScn” keyboard shortcut to save the screenshot as a file on your computer directly. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Press your keyboard’s “Windows + PrtScn” keys simultaneously. This captures a screenshot of your entire screen and saves it as a file on your computer.

Step 2: Navigate to the “Pictures” folder on your computer.

Step 3: Locate the “Screenshots” subfolder within the “Pictures” directory to find the captured screenshot.

Step 4: Open the screenshot in the image editing program from the “Screenshots” folder to edit or save it as a new image file.

Quick Tip: To locate the Screenshots folder, open File Explorer and click Pictures. You can also use the Windows key + E keyboard shortcut to open File Explorer and look for Pictures on the navigation panel. In addition, your screenshot will be saved in your OneDrive account if you have it enabled.

II. Capture Part of the Screen on an HP Laptop

Sometimes, we may need to capture a specific portion within an application window, and Windows also offers a solution for this scenario.

Step 1: Press and hold down the Windows key and the Shift key, then press the S key. This action causes the entire screen to become translucent or foggy and transforms the mouse pointer into a + sign.

Step 2: Left-click your mouse and drag it over the area you wish to capture. The selected area will no longer be translucent. Once you’ve captured the desired region, release the mouse button. Windows will then copy the selected area to the clipboard.

To cancel the screen capture operation, press the Esc key at the top left of your keyboard.

Step 3: To transfer the screenshot to an application or an online page, hold down the Ctrl key and press V.

III. Take a Screenshot of an Active Window on HP

To capture an active window (the active window is the one that you are currently working on) on your HP laptop, follow these steps:

Step 1: Launch any application window on your HP laptop

Step 2: Use the keyboard shortcut “Alt + PrtSc” to capture the active window, placing it in the clipboard. Note that there is no visual confirmation of the capture.

Step 3: Open an image editing program, then press “Ctrl + V” to paste the screenshot. You can edit or save it from there as a new image file.

3. Using a Snipping Tool on HP

Windows comes with a built-in snipping tool that allows you to capture any part of the screen and turn it into an image. The snipping tool only works with Windows operating systems. The steps for capturing a screenshot may vary if you use a different operating system. It is advisable to refer to the documentation specific to your operating system for more information on taking screenshots.

The snipping tool has three different ways you can capture screenshots on HP, and I will explain each below:

Follow the steps below to use the Snipping Tool correctly:

Step 1: Open Snipping Tool: Click on the Windows Search Bar > Type Snipping Tool in the search bar > Open the app

Snipping tool window

Step 2: Create New Snip: Select New from the top bar to start a new screenshot.

Create new snip

Step 3: Choose Mode: Choose from Free-Form, Rectangular Snip, or Window Snip in the Mode option.

  • Free-Form Snip: Freely cut out the image in any shape, whether ovular, circular, or freeform.
  • Rectangular Snip: Cut a rectangular piece from the screenshot.
  • Window Snip: Only select a particular window or dialog box in the image.

Step 4: Click The Screenshot: Your screen will appear hazy, and the cursor will change to a placemark > Cut out the area you want to capture.

Step 5: Save The Snip: Now, press the Save Snip button once you see the preview of your screenshot. The button looks like a Floppy Disk icon.

Step 6: Save As Image: To save the screenshot, click on the “File” menu and select “Save As” from the drop-down menu. Name the image > Decide the file type, like PNG, JPEG > Save.

4. Using Windows, Shift, And S Keys on HP

Snip & Sketch enables you to capture full-screen or specific parts of your HP computer screen as screenshots. These screenshots are stored in the clipboard, allowing you to save them as JPG files directly or paste them into emails or Word documents.

To take a screenshot with Snip & Sketch on an HP computer, you can follow these steps:

Step 1. Quickly launch Snip & Sketch by pressing the Windows + Shift + S shortcut. This action will open the screenshot app and then cause your screen to fade into a white overlay, and your cursor will transform into a + sign.

Step 2. Next, select the desired portion of your screen to capture as a screenshot. The captured screenshot will automatically be saved to your clipboard.

Step 3. Open an editing tool of your choice and paste the screenshot with the Ctrl + V shortcut. You can then save the screenshot in JPG or PNG format within the editing program on your HP computer.

For Windows 10 users, you can access and enable Snip & Sketch functionality by navigating to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard > Print Screen shortcut and then enabling the “Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping option.”

5. Xbox Game Bar

This is an ideal method of capturing game screenshots on HP. The menu also has a Screen Record option, which can also benefit gamers who want to capture gameplay.

Use the Windows key+G in the way described below:

Step 1: Use the Combination: Press the Win+G buttons on the keyboard together.

Step 2: Capture your Screenshot: It will open a vertical pop-up in the center of your screen > Click the Camera symbol to quickly grab a screenshot.

Screen capture tool

Conclusion on How to Screenshot on HP Laptop

While your HP laptop provides several methods for capturing a snapshot, it may not be as efficient as using a dedicated tool that offers value-added features like Zight.

There are several reasons native screenshot apps may not be ideal, such as the potential risk of losing your captures during device changes and limited editing tools. On the contrary, Zight provides everything necessary for producing high-quality screenshots, including convenient shortcuts like Alt + Shift + 5, advanced annotation and security features, and cloud storage capabilities.

So, why not get Zight today – it’s your best screenshot tool for Windows!
